• Hawaii

Known under the name of Aloha State, Hawaii is the only overseas American State and one of the two incontiguous ones with the remainder of the country. We are here in the Northern Pacific, 2,397 miles away from San Francisco. The Hawaii islands are between 18th and the 22th northern degree of latitude, that is to say right in the south of the Tropic of Cancer, in the middle of the subtropical zone. A total of eight large volcanic and mountainous islands, and 114 minor islands constitute Hawaii. Six are particularly very famous and attract a lot of tourists all year long : Oahu, Hawaii, Kauai, Maui and, a bit less frequented, Lanai and Molokai.

The climate is tropical, with a strong contrast between the coasts at the wind, very sprinkled (north-eastern coasts) and the shores, much drier. The annual average temperature is of 27° C.

Became the 50th State of the United States on August 21, 1959, Hawaii was a monarchy until January 17, 1893, date on which Queen Liliuokalani resigned.

The Hawaii islands were baptized the Sandwich islands by Captain James Cook who visited them in 1778. The famous British sailor was to go back a year there later and to be killed there.

Since 1820, the American whalers made this archipelago a stopover.

Hawaii is today a melting pot of many cultures dominated by Polynesian, Chinese and Japanese. People say that Hawaii is the world's friendliest place - and the hospitality, so it seems, is contagious.
